PUBLIC STATEMENT: Alianza Educativa mourns the passing of Teacher Kevin Santiago Ángel Garzón The Board of Directors, the General Directorate of Alianza Educativa, and the leadership team of Colegio Santiago de las Atalayas express to the public, the media, and the general public our deepest sorrow and dismay at the passing of our beloved teacher and colleague, Kevin Santiago Ángel Garzón, who had been missing since May 20. Today, society loses an extraordinary human being and an exemplary educator from Colegio Santiago de las Atalayas. Kevin Santiago was a man of deep vocation, whose empathy, dedication, and human warmth left an indelible mark on his students, colleagues, and our entire community. His passing, under these circumstances that fill us with mourning today, leaves an irreparable void in the hearts of all of us who were fortunate enough to share time with him. In light of this painful event, we respectfully request that the competent authorities act with the necessary speed and rigor in their investigations to clarify the circumstances surrounding this incident. To honor his life and legacy, tomorrow, Tuesday, May 26, will be a day of mourning at the institution and, therefore, there will be no classes. Likewise, we invite all citizens and the educational community to join a candlelight vigil in his memory next Wednesday, May 27, at 2:00 PM at the facilities of Colegio Santiago de las Atalayas. We ask those who join us to bring a white candle and a garment of the same color, as a symbol of love, respect, and the eternal rest of our beloved Kevin. We would like to express our gratitude to the Mayor’s Office of Bogotá, the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation, the District Secretariat of Education, the District Secretariat of Security and Coexistence, and other public and private institutions and authorities that supported us in the search efforts. We also thank the family members, friends, and colleagues who mobilized tirelessly, driven by affection and respect, as well as our entire educational community—students and parents—who expressed their solidarity. That network of support is our greatest source of strength today. We extend a heartfelt and profound embrace to Professor Kevin Santiago’s family, asking everyone to maintain the utmost respect, love, and prudence toward his loved ones during these days of such pain. His light and dedication will never be forgotten. Alianza Educativa Colegio Santiago de las Atalayas
Experience from within the educational model that is currently healing and transforming Bogotá from its classrooms.
Experience from within the educational model that is currently healing and transforming Bogotá from its classrooms. How is public education in Bogotá transformed? For over 26 years, we have been demonstrating that a public-private alliance can change lives and reduce the inequality gap, and we do so with one certainty: no child can learn if they do not first feel safe, seen, and emotionally supported. We want you to experience it yourself. That is why we created our Open Days: monthly gatherings where we open our doors for you to feel the energy of our communities, learn about our school management model, and discuss up close the true transformative power of care and learning. Our first experience of the year showed us that when people walk the halls and talk to students, something changes. It is not the same to read about “well-being” as it is to see a space designed for every child to feel safe, build their life project, and enjoy their process through the joy of learning. We want to build ties with individuals, companies, and organizations from the public and private sectors who share this vision of quality education that cares for every part of the process. Our next gathering: Open Day at Colegio Jaime Garzón. We invite you to be part of our second session: When? May 25, starting at 9:00 AM. Where? Colegio Jaime Garzón (Calle 85A No. 49-45 Sur, Bogotá). What will you experience with us on this day? Feel the territory: Walk through the school and talk one-on-one with our educational community. Discover our essence: Learn in depth how we manage education by placing socio-emotional stability and learning at the center of everything. Be inspired by life stories: Hear the lessons learned from our network of schools and see how care translates into transformation. Join the change: Discover our Circle of Allies and the ways we can collaborate to bring this public management experience to every corner of Bogotá and Colombia. Spaces are limited because we value close conversations and strong collaboration for quality education. Secure your spot and come connect with us: Register here to live the experience
AI and Comics: the new language with which Alianza Educativa revolutionizes English learning
AI and Comics: the new language with which Alianza Educativa revolutionizes English learning Within the framework of the Inspire Festival, held at the facilities of Colegio Gimnasio La Montaña, Alianza Educativa reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive, quality bilingual education. Participation in this event was an opportunity to showcase students’ creative output through a powerful theme: comics. In these pieces, young people narrate their identity, their interests, and their life projects, taking the English language beyond the classroom to describe their families, their neighborhoods, and their future aspirations. This artistic exhibition reflects an institutional pedagogical strategy that, as highlighted by Academic Director Paola Trujillo, seeks to keep the organization at the forefront through the integration of Artificial Intelligence and a focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Under this vision, Alianza assumes the commitment to guarantee English learning so that students develop relevant competencies to face the challenges of the 21st century; an effort that transcends the classroom and has led to expanding the curriculum from fourth grade to consolidate these skills from elementary school. As explained by Juliana Solórzano, Head of the English Department, “the purpose is to ensure that absolutely all students learn the language. Therefore, this year a strategic deployment has been initiated in 4th and 5th grades that provides the necessary foundation so that, upon reaching high school, they can tackle content of greater complexity.” The consolidation of this learning is supported by an interdisciplinary network that combines technology and cross-curricular integration. Externally, the institution works with the artificial intelligence platform LingoQuesto, which allows students to practice their speaking in real time, in addition to having teacher training agreements with ÚNICA. Internally, English has ceased to be an isolated subject and now connects with other disciplines. An innovative example is the work with the mathematics department through mathematical calendars from sixth to eleventh grade, where students apply reading strategies in English to solve logical problems. Likewise, collaboration with Spanish Language Arts has enabled the creation of stories for the Writers’ Gallery, integrating literature in both languages. This diversity of approaches is made possible by the work of 40 teachers who implement varied practices, such as the development of illustrated dictionaries where vocabulary is always placed in context. Regarding this personalization of teaching, Karen Sallas, English teacher at Colegio Jorge Isaacs, emphasizes that the key lies in students’ interests: “The practices I apply so that all my students learn are based on focusing on their diverse interests and talents. Today, through art and comics, we demonstrate how they can implement their learning by connecting it directly with the curricular guide.” With this commitment, Alianza Educativa continues to establish itself as a benchmark in educational management in Bogotá, transforming English learning into a tool of purpose, identity, and enjoyment for all its students. Alianza Educativa receives the Simón Bolívar Order of Democracy, Commander’s Cross grade
Alianza Educativa receives the Simón Bolívar Order of Democracy at the highest grade: Commander’s Cross In a context in which public education faces the challenge of ensuring not only access, but also complete learning pathways, retention, and future prospects, the Congress of the Republic awarded Alianza Educativa the Simón Bolívar Order of Democracy, Commander’s Cross grade—the highest distinction granted by Congress—in recognition of the organization’s contribution to the education and social sectors. This recognition highlights its work to strengthen public education in Colombia through the transfer of experience, best practices, and a high-quality curriculum. The ceremony, held in the Luis Carlos Galán Hall, recognizes a 26-year track record that has shown it is possible to close inequality gaps through education. Along this path, Alianza Educativa has established itself as a city asset: a public-private collaboration model that makes quality education possible and expands real opportunities for thousands of students, contributing effectively to equity and social development. The ceremony was attended by principals, parents, and student ombudspersons from the eleven schools, as well as administrators and the leaders, managers, and founders of Alianza Educativa: Raquel Bernal, President of Universidad de los Andes; Juan Fernando Corral, Headmaster of Colegio San Carlos; Camilo Camargo, Headmaster of Colegio Los Nogales; and María Mercedes de Brigard, Headmistress of Colegio Gimnasio La Montaña—key partners in consolidating this model. The decoration—whose invitation was led by Bogotá Representative to the Chamber Andrés Forero—was accompanied, in his remarks, by recognition of the impact of Alianza Educativa’s model. He highlighted the organization’s ability to transform one of the system’s most critical issues: dropout rates and the lack of continuity in educational pathways. “This was a recognition that was long overdue in the Congress of the Republic, because Alianza Educativa has now spent 25 years transforming the lives of thousands of young people in the district and thousands of families. One of the most sensitive issues for public education is school dropout, and it has been addressed very successfully by Alianza Educativa, which has achieved a dropout rate in its schools of just 0.03% in 2024, while for the rest of the district’s schools it was 2.49%”, Forero stated, also underscoring its ability to ensure quality education in complex social environments. This recognition highlights a sustained commitment over 26 years: ensuring that ALL students learn. That principle guides every decision at Alianza Educativa and translates into work focused on closing inequality gaps through quality public education, based on the transfer of experience, the implementation of best practices, and a strong curriculum. From the partner institutions, this purpose is understood as a national commitment. This was expressed by Raquel Bernal, President of Universidad de los Andes, as she emphasized the model’s long-term vision and its impact on social mobility: “Our dream is that, by transforming the lives of the children and adolescents of this country, we can close those learning gaps that have caused inequality in the country. Our dream is to continue contributing to Alianza Educativa and to help it grow; we truly believe in education as the best driver of social mobility for Colombia, and from Universidad de los Andes we remain committed to contributing to Alianza through our best practices.” This impact is built through a comprehensive approach that places deep learning and human development at the center, with the following pillars: addressing learning gaps in a timely manner with a rigorous focus on foundational learning, supported by systematic leveling and remediation processes that ensure no student is left behind; promoting the building of positive relationships and the development of socio-emotional skills in diverse environments; intentionally supporting each student’s life project, connecting learning with their transition to higher education; and strengthening educational management with a clear focus on teaching quality and continuous improvement. From the organization’s leadership, these results reflect a core conviction: putting the student at the center transforms life trajectories. This was highlighted by Diana Paola Basto, Executive Director of Alianza Educativa: “Alianza Educativa is proof that collaboration between the public and private sectors for the common good—in this case, quality public education—is possible. Alianza’s example over these 26 years shows that, by putting the student at the center and ensuring that ALL students truly learn, we can transform life trajectories. This is reflected in the 72% transition rate to higher education in 2024, well above Bogotá and Colombia”. Alianza Educativa’s results are consistent: two institutions in the top A+ category and seven in category A. In school climate, there is a 70.9% reduction in serious incidents and a 99.7% effectiveness rate in mediations that prevent conflicts from escalating. This work has been recognized internationally, with the Safe Navigation program as a finalist in the QS Reimagine Education Awards. With this decoration, the Congress of the Republic recognizes an experience that demonstrates it is possible to ensure learning, retention, and well-being for all, expanding real and sustainable opportunities for thousands of children and adolescents in Colombia.
